TYPE OF SUPPORT
Background
Researchers and practitioners face challenges in adapting varied data sources for assessing characteristics of different ecosystems. This creates a bottleneck in scaling up indicator development across Australia’s diverse ecosystems.
The Ecosystem Indicators Workflows project aims to make it easier to measure and track the health of Australia's ecosystems by providing fit-for-purpose tools and datasets that support the development of ecosystem-specific indicators.
By streamlining how environmental data is analysed, the project helps researchers, land managers and policymakers assess ecosystem condition more consistently and at greater scale.
QCIF Role
The QCIF Sustainable Futures team is contributing as a key collaborator, drawing on its expertise in environmental data platforms, ecological modelling and biodiversity informatics to help accelerate indicator development, promote best practice and support the delivery of practical, scalable solutions for ecosystem monitoring and management.
The datasets and workflow will be hosted on EcoCommons Australia.
Outcome & Impact
The project will provide ecologists, conservation practitioners, environmental managers, researchers, policymakers and community organisations with a practical tools for developing ecosystem-specific indicators.
These indicators will help users monitor environmental change, assess the impact of management actions, identify emerging threats and make evidence-based decisions.
By standardising how ecosystem health is measured, the project will improve reporting, support collaboration across regions and organisations, and enable more effective environmental management.

"We're proud to partner on this ARDC project to bring ecosystem indicator workflows into EcoCommons. Working to make these complex data streams transparent and reproducible within the platform will give decision-makers and ecologists the tools they need to drive real nature-positive outcomes."
