What we do

QCIF Enterprise Solutions delivers a comprehensive suite of software products, development services, and integration expertise.

The team comprises experienced system architects, software engineers, and project managers who specialise in metadata management and system integration, particularly in aligning research platforms with institutional identity and access management systems such as Single Sign-On and federated login via AAF.

The team has successfully delivered solutions that connect research data platforms with institutional repositories, storage infrastructure, and data publishing services. A key product is ReDBox, an open-source research data management platform that enables researchers and institutions to plan, manage, and publish their research data assets effectively.

In addition to ReDBox, QCIF Enterprise Solutions manages the BioPlatforms Australia Data Portal, a national platform supporting the discovery, access, and reuse of multi-omics datasets. This portal facilitates data sharing across bioscience disciplines and ensures the long-term stewardship of nationally significant biological data assets.

Focus Area

Software Project Activities

The QCIF Enterprise Solutions team provides end-to-end support for enterprise software project delivery, combining deep expertise in metadata and research data management with robust systems integration and testing capabilities. The team works closely with clients to conduct thorough requirements gathering and analysis, ensuring solutions are tailored to specific research and institutional needs. From proof-of-concept development to full-scale implementation, the team delivers scalable, secure, and sustainable platforms.

In addition, QCIF offers software platform hosting and ongoing support, underpinned by strong project management practices that ensure timely delivery and alignment with strategic objectives.

Software Development Skills and Technology

The team brings deep technical expertise across a wide range of software development tools and platforms. On the server side, the team works with Python, JavaScript (Node.js), and Java (Spring and Grails), while client-side development includes HTML, CSS, and JavaScript frameworks such as Angular and Sails.

For data management, the team is proficient in both relational and non-relational databases, including PostgreSQL, MySQL, and MongoDB. Their cloud computing capabilities span Nectar, AWS, Google Cloud, Azure, and Terraform, enabling scalable and flexible deployment. This broad technology stack supports the delivery of robust, secure, and high-performing research software solutions tailored to the needs of Australian higher-education and research institutions.

ReDBox Management

ReDBox 2.0 is an open-source research data management platform that assists researchers and institutions to plan, create and publish their research data assets.

ReDBox 2.0 helps data custodians to meet institutional data management policies, applying the requirements of the Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research, and publishing to Research Data Australia.

QCIF leads the ReDBox 2.0 development initiative and provides support services to subscribing institutions and the ReDBox community.

For managed deployment services for Redbox, please reach out to the Redbox team for a presentation and demonstration of the platform.

Storage

We offer research data storage services, providing scalable, secure, and cost-effective options to support the full research data lifecycle. Enterprise Solutions facilitates access to these services, helping institutions and research teams embed storage into their broader data management strategies.

We provide two storage classes tailored to research needs:

Warp: for active datasets requiring fast, low-latency access to support sharing and analysis ($463/TB/year for members).

Ark: for long-term or archived datasets that require secure and reliable preservation, with replication across geographically separated data centres ($93/TB/year for members).

Access is managed via the Australian Access Federation (AAF), allowing researchers to log in with institutional credentials and enabling secure collaboration with external partners. These storage services include replication, and recovery features that safeguard data, with access supported through common research protocols and connections to HPC and cloud environments.

By connecting researchers and institutions to QCIF’s storage services, Enterprise Solutions ensures that storage becomes a reliable foundation for end-to-end research data management.
