Transforming Transport Planning to Boost Cycling and Build Healthier, More Sustainable Cities

TYPE OF SUPPORT

Research Background

Cycling data in Australia is currently fragmented, limiting evidence-based planning and policy.

The National Cycling Data and Analytics Platform (NCDAP) brings together historic and new data on cycling infrastructure, behaviours, and attitudes, supported by a national survey.

The platform reduces data fragmentation and provides tools to explore infrastructure scenarios, with the goal of improving transport planning, encouraging cycling participation, and supporting healthier, more sustainable cities.

QCIF Role

QCIF has supported the project by designing and developing the web-based interface that enables urban and transport planners to interact with the underlying modelling system.

Specifically, QCIF staff implemented functionality for planners to draw proposed cycling infrastructure directly onto an interactive map, query model outputs, and visualise projected cycling uptake.

The system returns results as structured tables of potential users, aggregated by ABS statistical regions intersected by the proposed paths.

Research Outcome & Impact

  • Interactive web tool for planners to model and visualise cycling uptake

  • Integrated national dataset and survey on cycling attitudes and behaviours

  • Evidence-based planning and investment in cycling infrastructure

  • Healthier communities, reduced congestion, and lower emissions
