Stephen Bird is a seasoned leader with over 30 years of experience in software development, cloud computing, HPC, and digital research infrastructure. As Executive Manager, Advanced Computing at QCIF, he delivers cutting-edge capabilities to Queensland universities and national research initiatives.
Stephen has led the Queensland Node of the ARDC Nectar Research Cloud for over a decade, managing multi-million-dollar investments in cloud and storage infrastructure. He has played a key role in national projects including SeRP, Australian Characterisation Commons at Scale, and EAML, and contributed to platforms like EcoCommons, Galaxy Australia, and WildObs.
With a strong background in executive leadership, Stephen excels in strategic planning, team development, and customer-focused service delivery. He has built deep collaborations across NCRIS projects and Australian universities, always seeking to connect and enhance existing capabilities.
Before QCIF, Stephen held senior roles at Genesys Telecommunications Laboratories, leading global teams in software engineering, services, and customer care.
Outside of work, Stephen is passionate about landscape photography and abstract painting.
