Professor Ian Smith joined the QCIF Board of Directors in 2020. He completed his first degree in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, and moved to Australia in 1984 to undertake a PhD at Prince Henry’s Institute and Monash University. Ian held senior roles at the Baker Heart Research Institute before joining Monash University in 2004, where he served as Vice-Provost (Research & Research Infrastructure) until retiring in 2020. He remains an Emeritus Professor at Monash.
Ian oversaw major research alliances and infrastructure strategies, shaping the university’s future capabilities. With a strong background in both industry and research, Ian is a leader in medical science, with over 260 publications, numerous patents, and ongoing invitations to speak internationally. His work has influenced clinical practice and human health outcomes.
He co-founded a proteomics-based biotech company, guiding it to IPO and trade sale, and continues to consult widely across the pharmaceutical and biotech sectors. Ian serves on several national and international advisory boards, many with an industry focus.
Driven by a passion for collaboration, Ian advocates for stronger links between universities and industry to foster innovation. He believes Australia must better leverage its research assets and is committed to making collaboration more effective and impactful.
