QCIF Digital Research Welcomes its First International Member: The Malaghan Institute of Medical Research in New Zealand

This partnership marks an exciting step in QCIF’s continued expansion beyond Australia and highlights its growing recognition as a key player in the data science and data engineering ecosystem.

3 June 2026

QCIF Digital Research is excited to welcome the Malaghan Institute of Medical Research, New Zealand’s leading independent biomedical research charity, as its first offshore member.

This partnership marks an exciting step in QCIF’s continued expansion beyond Australia and highlights its growing recognition as a key player in the data science and data engineering ecosystem.

Based in Wellington, New Zealand, the Malaghan Institute specialises in cutting-edge research and clinical trials aimed at advancing understanding of the immune system and its relationship to human health.

The Institute is home to more than 140 research scientists, technicians, and support staff. Its work focuses particularly on cancer, allergic and inflammatory conditions, and infectious diseases, with the goal of translating new discoveries into therapies that help prevent, treat, and ultimately cure disease.

Expanding access to expertise for biomedical programs

Through this membership, researchers at the Malaghan Institute will gain fully subsidised access to QCIF's specialist expertise, enabling them to accelerate research outcomes and build capacity across a wide range of biomedical programs.

The membership provides a suite of benefits designed to support researchers at every stage of the research lifecycle, including:

  • Members advice: guidance on experimental design, statistical and bioinformatics analysis planning, and results interpretation on a wide range of disciplines, including AI, machine learning, health informatics, data engineering, advanced computing, and software development.

  • Grant preparation support: assistance with experimental design, statistical and bioinformatics analysis planning and drafting of key sections of grant applications, and preparing associated costings, helping to strengthen the competitiveness of funding submissions.

  • Analysis Hotel and PhD co-supervision: structured, ongoing support sessions with QCIF Digital Research experts on analysis pipelines, methods, and tools. This approach allows researchers and students to develop their own analytical skills while benefiting from guidance on interpreting results and planning next steps.

  • Comprehensive training access: full access to QCIF’s extensive training program, which includes approximately 80 workshops and 640 hours of training annually, supporting skills development in bioinformatics and data science.

In addition, the partnership offers member rates on QCIF embedded staff and services, along with opportunities to access major Australian cloud and high-performance computing capabilities through collaborative projects.

Flexible partnerships for evolving research needs

QCIF’s competitive advantage lies in its diverse range of data and digital expertise, infrastructure, and tools, combined with the agility to deliver flexible, fit-for-purpose data science, data engineering and software development capabilities.

In line with this approach, The Malaghan Institute has identified the need for ongoing bioinformatics and biostatistics support across its diverse research streams. QCIF Digital Research will work closely with the Institute leadership to scope and prioritise projects, providing tailored analysis plans and scalable support aligned with research priorities.

This flexible model ensures that researchers can access deeper support when needed, while maintaining the agility to respond to evolving scientific challenges.

Strengthening the regional research ecosystem

As a member of QCIF Digital Research, The Malaghan Institute now joins a broad community of universities, government initiatives and research organisations with access to QCIF’s cutting-edge data and digital infrastructure capabilities in data science, applied AI, quantum, bioinformatics, statistics, advanced computing, qualitative research, and software solutions.

We look forward to the exciting outcomes this partnership will generate to the Australasian research and innovation community, enabling new discoveries that will contribute to improving the lives of people in the region.
