Deakin University upgrades to QCIF managed ReDBox 4.0 platform

30 April 2025

QCIF is pleased to announce its collaboration with Deakin University to successfully upgrade their existing on-premise ReDBox 1.0 Research Data Management Platform (RDMP) to the QCIF Managed Redbox 4.0 platform, hosted securely on Amazon Web Services (AWS).

ReDBox (Research Data Box) is an open-source Research Data Management plan (RDMP) that assists researchers and institutions to plan, create and publish their research data assets.

The new platform went live on 10 April 2025, representing a major milestone in Deakin’s ongoing commitment to advancing research data management capability.

This upgrade moves Deakin’s Research Data Management Program to a modern, cloud-based solution maintained by QCIF, providing ongoing access to new features, updates, and enhanced support.

“We are glad to be able to assist Deakin by upgrading their instance to the latest version of ReDBox,” said Troy Lockett, Executive Manager, Enterprise Solutions at QCIF.

“Researchers will instantly see the benefits of the new platform through improved usability, streamlined workflows, and closer integration with existing research tools like Figshare.”

The ReDBox 4.0 platform is integrated with Deakin’s Figshare repository, delivering improved forms, streamlined workflows, and additional capabilities for managing datasets and data management plans (DMPs). Importantly, the upgrade provides a strong foundation for future enhancements driven by the ReDBox user community and QCIF’s ongoing development roadmap.

Deakin University has a long-standing history with ReDBox, having been a founding member of the ReDBox community when QCIF took over the development of the platform on behalf of the research community in 2013.

This latest upgrade continues Deakin’s commitment to providing their researchers with advanced tools for managing research data and supporting good research data management practices.

ReDBox is currently deployed to 13 institutions across Australia and New Zealand, supporting universities and research organisations with flexible data management solutions.

In addition, the Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG) operates an instance of Redbox to assist with defence-related research projects, highlighting the platform’s versatility and capability to support specialised research environments.

QCIF looks forward to continuing to support Deakin University and other institutions with cutting-edge, Australian-hosted data management solutions that meet the evolving needs of the research community.
