Celebrating Jenna and Melissa's journey with Homeward Bound

31 July 2025

QCIF is proud to celebrate two exceptional members of our community who have been selected for the prestigious Homeward Bound program.

Dr Jenna Wraith, Head of Sustainable Futures and Principal Data Scientist (Ecological Modelling) at QCIF and Dr Melissa Burke, Training Manager for Australian BioCommons, will join Team HB10, an elite cohort that represents the future of leadership in science and environmental stewardship.

A global leadership initiative

Homeward Bound is a global transformational program designed specifically for women and non-binary people with STEMM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine) backgrounds across all career stages.

More than just professional development, it's a gateway into a global network of leaders united by a shared purpose: developing the kind of leadership our world needs to tackle complex environmental and scientific challenges.

Team HB10 comprises 37 carefully selected individuals representing 19 nationalities across 15 countries. This diverse group embodies the program's core values of diversity, initiative, bravery, and collaboration, essential qualities for addressing today's most pressing global issues.

Personal reflections on the journey ahead

Both Jenna and Melissa bring unique perspectives to this 12-month program beginning in June 2025.

"Being part of Homeward Bound means stepping back from the day-to-day and making space to grow as a leader — not just in my work, but in how I show up for others, for science, and for the planet," reflects Jenna. "It's a chance to connect with incredible women in STEMM and work together on the big-picture challenges that really matter."

Melissa emphasizes the program's focus on authentic leadership and community.

"Joining Homeward Bound is a chance to be courageous and step up as a leader, for myself and for those around me with authenticity. It's an incredible opportunity to join a stellar community of women and non-binary people in STEMM who are supporting one another to make a difference in the world."

Impact and looking forward

As they begin this transformative journey, we’re looking forward to seeing how the new skills and experiences they gain will shape their careers and inspire those around them.

We’re proud to support them and can’t wait to see the positive, lasting impact they’ll make, for science, our communities, and the planet.
