Deakin University upgrades to ReDBox 3 for library dataset management

18 July 2024

Deakin University has upgraded its RedBox subscription from version 1 to version 3, transitioning from an on-premises system to an AWS cloud-based system.

This move allows Deakin to leverage the flexibility and security of a leading cloud computing environment, as well as access new customisations and branding through the QCIF software engineering team.

ReDBox has been designed to assist universities in bringing their research metadata under management, meeting the Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research, and interfacing with Research Data Australia, the national research data discovery system.

Troy Lockett, Manager for Enterprise Solutions at QCIF, said, “It’s great to have Deakin upgrade their Redbox 1 instance to the latest Redbox 3. It will provide them with the opportunity to integrate more systems with Redbox, as well as the ability for more customisable screens and the future capability to provision services from within Redbox such as storage, Virtual Machines, and research tool environments.”

Using Agile methodology, the QCIF Enterprise Solutions team will rapidly customise and deploy Redbox 3 through a series of sprints onto AWS infrastructure. This approach along with QCIF hosting of the service, ensures that the customer can continually monitor the project status but won’t have the burden of system administration or future maintenance.

Deakin University is part of a large group of universities that use RedBox as their preferred online research data management system. This group includes James Cook University, the University of Wollongong, the University of Canberra, and the University of Auckland, among others, with more universities to adopt this platform in the near future.
