QRIScloud features new flavours and containers

New instance flavours and container services are now available on QRIScloud as part of overall Nectar Research Cloud improvements.

Nectar flavours make it easier to support different user requirements and enable efficient use of the Nectar Cloud infrastructure, including QRIScloud. Four new flavour classes have been introduced, namely:

  • Standard (m3) — suited to most workloads
  • RAM Optimised (r3) — for workloads that require more memory
  • CPU Optimised (c3) — best suited to compute-intensive workloads
  • Tiny (t3) — great for testing and prototyping or even just simple workloads.

Each flavour class provides users with a range of different-sized instance flavours to choose from to support their compute workloads, with these options described on the Nectar website.

As the old flavour classes are being phased out, we encourage you to start using the new flavours in your projects and update any Heat templates, scripts or any other build systems you may be using.

New container services deployed on QRIScloud and the Nectar Research Cloud include a Simple Container Service (Docker) and a Container Orchestration Service (Kubernetes).

A streamlined service, which leverages OpenStack Murano, enables Docker containers to be quickly launched via the Nectar dashboard. Through this service, users can launch one of more than 13,000 applications available on Docker Hub into a new Nectar instance pre-prepared with the Docker container daemon.

More information on launching a Docker container is available on the Nectar website.

A service enabling users to provision a Kubernetes container cluster, using OpenStack Magnum, is being trialled. The service, which is available on the Nectar dashboard, is currently being tested, with more users being sought for the trial. Visit the Nectar website for a guide on how to spin up a Kubernetes container cluster, and email your feedback to: This email address is being protected from spambots.
