Why researchers use Nextcloud for research data storage

By Dr Francis Gacenga, QCIF eResearch Analyst at USQ.

It is good research data management practice to prepare for disaster recovery by having more than one copy of your research data.

QCIF, and its member universities, through its eResearch Analysts supports good research data management by providing secure, reliable and on-shore data storage for researchers.

University research data management policies and procedures typically recommend having more than one copy of your research data — at least one primary and two secondary copies.

At USQ it is recommended that researchers use USQ’s Research Data Bank (ReDBank), Nextcloud and QRIScloud, whose terms and conditions support research data storage and make it easier to align with funding and regulatory requirements. This may not be the case when using other products or services for research data storage.

In addition to securing data and making recovery easier in the event of a disaster, Nextcloud is great for collaboration. Once the Nextcloud client app’ is installed it is easy to synchronise research data and share through controlled collaboration.

The Nextcloud sharing and storing data guide is provided to help researchers.
