QCIF has made a strong investment in high performance computing infrastructure since its inception in 2001. QCIF's major HPC facilities are housed at, and maintained by, the University of Queensland.
This infrastructure includes:
- Two SGI Altix (64 bit) 3700 supercomputers;
- A 16 processor SGI Altix;
- A StorageTek Tape robot (populated with 220 TeraByte, but with 1 Peta Byte capacity);
- SGI DMF Hierarchical Storage Management system;
- SGI CXFS San (Storage Area Network); and
- ViSAC - The Visualisation Laboratory at the University of Queensland .
These facilities are used by all QCIF members.
In addition to the shared resources of QCIF, physically located at the University of Queensland, each university also has its own high performance computing resources. QCIF has an allocated 5% Partner Share of the APAC National Facility at ANUSF, with an additional 5% allocated under the nationally competitive APAC Merit Allocation Scheme. Mark Ragan (IMB/UQ) and Sean Smith (Chemistry/UQ) are Queensland's two largest users of the National Facility. They bring in substantial competitive ARC funding to support their research programs.
